Doing some quick Google searching showed a few other people with similar issues with different MSI motherboards having cable related issues, even replicating what you tried with a laptop giving gigabit speed but the desktop only getting 100 Mbps, so may definitely be worth trying a new cable. Checking with a new ethernet cable just to be sure should be relatively quick and painless. Try booting Ubuntu off a USB, that will help rule out OS issues. Was the "other machine" you tested with only the laptop? If so, try disabling the laptop's wireless NIC and doing that test again.ĮDIT: What I mean by "that test" is to go into Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections and look at the NIC's "Status" when you right-click the WIRED NIC on the laptop, with wireless NIC disabled. You should be expecting its status to show "1.0Gbps" connection and not 400Mbps. So, WHY were you expecting only 400Mbps on a wired Gigabit connection? That sounds more like the laptop was still on WiFi, not a wired connection.

Both machines are running Windows 10 Pro. Another machine plugged into the same cable gets full speed so it's not the modem/router/switch/cable. Thanks for all the replies, but I think some of the information in the description was overlooked. This computer has had a lot of different software VPNs installed over the years (Hamachi, Nord and others) - maybe one of those installed something that is causing a bottleneck (even when not in use)? I really don't want to reload Windows right now, but it may come to that. I've given all the NIC settings a pretty good lookover, disabled AV and also removed the NIC from device manager and let them reinstall. So that was a huge help as I now know it is something in Windows that is throttling. I decided to try MarkPayton's advice about booting from Linux to remove the OS from the equation and viola - speeds above 400 Mbps. In this case I did not mention that this specific PC was having the same issue in an entirely different office location and is now in a new location with new wiring, so I was pretty sure it was not a cabling issue. I too have seen those quirky things with cards and cables in the past. So I am hoping someone here has another option for me to try.All great suggestions and points.

I went in to adapter properties and tried to force the speed to 1.0gbps full duplex. I tried multiple ports and multiple switches and it just won't budge off 100mbps.

Since we run to patch panels I thought I'd try to run it directly to the switch. I re-terminated the ends one more time just in case but to no avail. So I ran a new cable to the switch and plugged everything in. At this point I determined that it was the cable. They however were still stuck at 100mbps.

I set them up with a new Windows 10 PC and all drivers up to date. The odd thing was the even the gig compatible USB to Ethernet adapter ran at 100mbps. (it needed to be upgraded to windows 10 anyway) So I put in a USB to Ethernet adapter to hold them off while I set up a replacement PC. The end of the day rolled around and when I came in the next day the ethernet card failed completely. Then I re-terminated the cable ends, no change.

The first thing I did was attempt to update drivers, no change. All other PC'sĪre currently at a gig and most PC's are the exact same cookie cutter PC as this one. I got a call about an issue with slow speeds, when I went to check the Ethernet adapter I realized that it was displaying a 100mbps connection despite our network being a gig. This PC is in a business setting on an active directory domain. I'll try to give a detailed explanation of what happened and what I have already done to troubleshoot the issue. So I have a PC that is stuck at 100MBPS no matter what I do.
